What is Neglect ?
What is Neglect?
Neglect is when our basic needs aren't met by the person responsible for caring for us, like a parent, carer, or grandparent. These needs include things like food, shelter, clothing, medical care, or emotional support.
Sometimes, it's because the person finds parenting tough due to challenges like addiction, mental illness, poverty, or not having a home.
Types of Neglect
Physical Neglect: Not having enough food, clothes, or a safe place to live.
Medical Neglect: Not getting help when injured or sick.
Emotional Neglect: Not getting love or care from a parent or carer.
Educational Neglect: Missing school or not going at all.
Abandonment: Being left alone for long periods.
Supervisory Neglect: Having to take care of yourself more than expected for your age.
The Opposite of Neglect
The opposite of neglect is getting the support we need in different parts of our lives as we grow up.
This support can come from parents, family, school, and the community, like having a safe place to live, getting love and care, being included in decisions, learning life lessons, exploring the world safely, having fun, and feeling accepted.
